Meet Lisa W…you have probably seen her around. Have you taken toothpaste or dental floss from the gym? She is the person behind these gifts. As a professional dental hygienist she is very concerned about your smile. She is also a great friend and an amazing CrossFitter, but let her tell us something about herself.
San Carlos CrossFit: Lisa who are you and where do you come from?
Lisa Watkins: I was born and raised in Modesto. I moved down to southern California for college and then moved back to Modesto after graduation. I was fresh out of school and looking for a change. I moved to Redwood City and joined CrossFit! I’ve been here about. 3 1/2 yrs now and I love it! I am working full time as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Menlo Park, living single with my lovable Labrador retriever, Toby.
SCCF: You have a history in athletics. Tell us your most memorable moment?
LW: Growing up I enjoyed playing soccer. I played through high school but my athletic career came to a halt when during a high school soccer game, I broke my big toe. I had to have surgery and pins placed. After that, I was pretty immobile and had to stop playing soccer. I tried to do sports with less running. I dabbled with shot put and discus on the track team but didn’t really care for it. College came and I became lazy…. I tried running after a few years but that just wasn’t for me. I stuck to riding dirt bikes
SCCF: With all the CrossFit and niche training facilites cropping up in the area, why us? And what got you started?
LW: I heard about CrossFit from a friend. They knew how I disliked going to the ordinary gym and was looking for something different. I checked it out once and was HOOKED! Not only is SCCF a nice box, the owners and members are amazing! SCCF has brought together a great group of people and this box truly feels like a second home.
SCCF: Tell the community one your biggest achievements since training with us, and where you want to be a year from now.
LW: Since training at San Carlos CrossFit, I’ve been able to DO everything I never could! Pull ups, push ups and run a 5k without a problem. I’ve also been able to make some of the best friends I’ve ever had!
SCCF: If a workout came up tomorrow that you dreaded the most, what would it be?
LW: Murph! That workout gets me everytime. 20 rounds of Cindy plus 1 mile run before and after… Tough
SCCF: We started this column to highlight members of our community and any hidden talents they may have. What ninja type skills would the community least likely guess you possessed?
LW: I’m a ninja crocheter! I could crochet you a pair of socks with my eyes closed.
SCCF: If paleo allowed all the beer and ice cream you could imagine, what flavors would they come in?
LW: Beer… I’m not a huge fan of beer, but I suppose I would stick to Pacifico and I would eat Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream
SCCF: Many say it’s the bond of suffering together, which brings this community close to one another. Have you found this to be true? Any other new found friendships worth mentioning?
LW: Yes, I believe that is true. SCCF has been so lucky to have such great members. Everyone is so supportive and a friendly competition is always fun. Breanne Feudale has become my closet friend since starting CrossFit. She is an amazing competitor and a great inspiration for me to try harder.
SCCF: Through pain and hard work comes clarity and results. What inspires you to keep coming back for more?
LW: I love that everyday is a different workout! I’m also digging the amazing results I’m seeing!
SCCF: Unknown and unknowable is a training principle we align ourselves with but you will often hear us nagging you to train with proper equipment. If you could recommend something to a new client looking to improve his dress code, what would it be?
SCCF: Top 5 songs you would sync to our iPod for your next training session
LW: Anything upbeat!
SCCF: We constantly preach the virtues of good sleep habits and ancestral type eating. Have you taken that step? What have you noticed most?
LW: I am now doing Paleo style eating and everything about my workouts have improved! I’ve lost weight and my strength is sky rocketing.
SCCF: If we found you kicking your feet up anywhere in the world, where would it be? And what book would you be reading?
LW: I would love to be in Costa Rica and I don’t enjoy reading but you will find me somewhere in the ocean!
SCCF: When you’re not down at our shop taming wolverines, what types of kinesthetic mischief would we find you celebrating in?
LW: I enjoy anything outdoors, especially at the beach! Most likely I would be with my dog, Toby.
SCCF: Is SCCF a family affair or are you the only exercise assassin of the bunch?
LW: I’m alone in the CrossFit world. I unfortunately don’t come from an athletic family but I do try to drag as many people I can into trying it. I LOVE it!
SCCF: Training in so many different modalities almost certainly exposes weaknesses is a person’s skillsets. Since training with us, what has been the most surprising exposure for you? And have there been any elated moments of newfound acquisition?
LW: Well, I found that I am truly not a runner! Running doesn’t come natural to me and I would like to work on it. I didn’t know that Olympic weighlifting would ever be so fun! And for the record, I love dead lifts!
SCCF: I don’t know about you but I am always thinking about my next meal. What’s for dinner tonight?
LW: Most likely chicken and veggies. It’s fast and easy.
SCCF: If we started taking up a collection fund at the box for you to be surgically modified with any superpower, would we find you banging out iron crosses for reps or cooking one of Amy’s paleo recipes with your eyes?
LW: I would be doing the iron cross while making my own delicious paleo recipes!
SCCF: We’ve been putting together a new equipment list. Any special requests?
LW: Hot Men? Haha
SCCF: If we want to know more what class would we most likely find you at?
LW: I try to be at the 5:30 pm class 4 days/week and Saturday’s
SCCF: Leave us with 3 words.
LW: I LOVE CROSSFIT
