Get to Know Kim Farrell

Meet Kim Farrell, one of the members of Team San Carlos Cross Fit, and we just found out she is an incredible softball player too.   We asked a bunch of questions about her introduction to SCCF,  here is what she had to say?
San Carlos CrossFit: The SCCF pride is comprised of people living in many different locales. Where did you grow up and what are you doing here now in the bay area?
Kim Farrell:  I grew up in the bay area and I never moved too far away.  I am still living on the peninsula and working in San Francisco.  I only work three days a week so the commute doesn’t bother me at all!!
SCCF: You have a history in athletics. Tell us your most memorable moment?
KF: I grew up playing softball and volleyball year round.  Going to Nationals for softball in Texas when I was in high school was very memorable.  It was amazing competing against the best players in the nation.
SCCF: Have you always been athletic or has CrossFit been your introduction to human movement, in general?
KF:: I have played sports my whole life.  Softball consumed my life until college, when I picked up lacrosse.  It was great to be exposed to a new challenging sport.
SCCF: With all the CrossFit and niche training facilites cropping up in the area, why us? And what got you started?
KF::  I just followed my younger brother Eric to SCCF.  He started about six months before I did.  He knew I would love it and I had never seen him in such good shape so I had to give it a try.
SCCF: Tell the community one your biggest achievements since training with us, and where you want to be a year from now.
KF::  I honestly never thought I would get double unders.  One day it just clicked, I still beat up my arms pretty badly but I can get though a workout.  A year from now I would love to master the muscle up!!!
SCCF: If a workout came up tomorrow that you dreaded the most, what would it be?
KF: It would definitely involve a snatch!!
SCCF: We started this column to highlight members of our community and any hidden talents they may have. What ninja type skills would the community least likely guess you possessed?
KF:  I don’t know about ninja skills but something very surprising about me is my obsession with the San Francisco Giants.  My extensive knowledge of the team and game can be very intimidating to even the strongest man.
SCCF: If paleo allowed all the beer and ice cream you could imagine, what flavors would they come in?
KF:  Hefeweizen beer and rocky road ice cream
SCCF: Many say it’s the bond of suffering together, which brings this community close to one another. Have you found this to be true? Any other new found friendships worth mentioning?
KF:  I would say that is definitely true misery loves company.  I have really enjoyed joining the SCCF community.  I do enjoy hanging out with members of the gym outside of the workouts.  I haven’t met a single person there who I haven’t enjoyed getting to know.
SCCF: Through pain and hard work comes clarity and results. What inspires you to keep coming back for more?
KF: I would say my competitive nature keeps me coming back.  These workouts are very challenging and sometimes you are not happy doing them but the sense of accomplishment and effect on your body is worth it.  Ever since I started crossfit I have felt stronger then I have ever been.
SCCF: Unknown and unknowable is a training principle we align ourselves with but you will often hear us nagging you to train with proper equipment. If you could recommend something to a new client looking to improve his dress code, what would it be?
KF:  I love lululemon.  I know you might think it is only for girls but they have clothing for guys also.  Even if you are having a horrible workout you will at least look good doing it wearing lulu!!
SCCF: Top 5 songs you would sync to our iPod for your next training session
KF:  I love country!!!  My favorite artists are Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and Sugarland.  Some people can’t workout to country music but I have no problem with it.
SCCF: If we found you kicking your feet up anywhere in the world, where would it be? And what book would you be reading?
KF:  I don’t need to go too far, any lake is fine with me.  Berryessa or Don Pedro are my favorites.  I am not very girly but I am a sucker for any Nicholas Sparks book.
SCCF: When you’re not down at our shop taming wolverines, what types of kinesthetic mischief would we find you celebrating in?
KF:  In my free time I am watching a giants game, hanging out with friends or wine tasting.
SCCF: Is SCCF a family affair or are you the only exercise assassin of the bunch?
KF::  Definitely a family affair.  My brother Eric and I love working out together and we have even brought our sister to join us for a workout.  We are a very competitive family and these workouts are perfect for us.
SCCF: Training in so many different modalities almost certainly exposes weaknesses is a person’s skillsets. Since training with us, what has been the most surprising exposure for you? And have there been any elated moments of newfound acquisition?
KF:  I have never really done any heavy weight lifting before this.  I have really surprised myself with the amount of weight I am capable of throwing around!!
SCCF: I don’t know about you but I am always thinking about my next meal. What’s for dinner tonight?
KF:: I’m on a fish kick right now, shrimp, salmon or sushi.
SCCF: If we want to know more what class would we most likely find you at?
KF: I go to the noon class most often, sometimes hit up the 430.  I like to change it up, routine is boring!
SCCF: Leave us with 3 words.
